Let’s face it, most of us try to separate our personal lives from our work lives. In the office, we are expected to conduct ourselves professionally and that includes being respectful of co-workers. Most importantly, we should always try to be clean and clutter-free – particularly in shared environments. However, in the real world, there will always be instances where our optimistic and energetic approach to doing tasks is marred by annoying habits caused by colleagues and others.
Despite the cleaning and maintenance crews that sweep through the office after hours, keeping the office clean is also a responsibility of each and every employee. But with the hustle and bustle of the working day, we tend to overlook the little things and the next thing we know, we are trying to wade through and work in a messy cubicle. Worse, we might be making it difficult for our colleagues and guests as well.
Here are some signs that office cleanliness is not up to the standard it should be:
Our things travel around the office more frequently than the news!
It’s normal to borrow stuff from our colleagues, especially if we share a cubicle or we work side by side. But, what is unusual and unprofessional are the instances where everyone on our floor starts seeing our things in almost every nook and cranny possible. We need to keep our belongings, particularly our junk where it should be!
The office fridge or kitchen is our own personal jungle!
We sometimes forget the fact that the kitchen and everything in it is common ground and we share it with everyone else. Unfortunately, our colleagues will never want any of our leftovers living in the fridge for weeks! Remember to always throw away half-eaten or half-finished food and drinks – particularly before the weekend or any holidays.
Our cubicle resembles an excavation site!
More often than not, we have our colleagues and even our managers visiting our desks to discuss business. It will not look good if they spot a couple of uneaten crisps congregating on one side of your desk while drink bottles or yoghurt pots are haphazardly littering your office floor beside an overflowing waste basket.
Nobody wants to work with a disorganised person. Although this doesn’t necessarily mean we are dirty, it still means that we are a messy person. Being tidy and considerate might slip our minds and not hinder us from performing our day-to-day tasks well, but it will definitely affect our colleagues. So, try to always keep your personal office spaces spic and span and be mindful of habits and hygiene.
