I don’t know about you, but whenever anyone talks about dust mites living in your pillow, on your mattress, bedding and carpets, I just feel replusion. The thought of “them” living on/in your pillow by the millions, eating your dead skin is enough to make your feel quite ill.
What are dust mites?
These little bugs are so small, microscopically small. They live on dead skin cells which we humans and animals shed. They do not carry diseases BUT can cause allergic reactions in people suffering from asthma. Did you know that a mattress can contain millions of dust mites (these are not the same as Bed Bugs – another topic altogether) One single dust mite can produce 20 waste droppings each day – think about it, how many droppings is that? It is these droppings that cause the many people to have an allergic reaction ranging from asthma attacks, itchy eyes, nose, skin, the list is endless. This is what the little mites look like under a microscope.
Detection
How would you know if you had dust mites? Well dust mites are present anyway, it’s just when you start suffering from ill health that people do something about it.
How do you control them?
The most obvious is to regularly wash your bedding. It is advisable to replace your pillows every so often. Wash soft furnishings on a monthly basis. Cuddly toys on children beds should be washed once a month on a hot cycle (not always possible but advisable). Vacuum cleaning helps to get rid of the fine dust. I have also heard that keeping a plastic back mattress topper is ideal on beds. Your carpets and upholstery should be cleaned professionally. At RPC Cleaning we specialise in dry carpet cleaning. As a company we are excited about investing and training in a product called Max Fibre Shield. This product is a totally environmentally friendly protector with a built-in microbial treatment which can be used anywhere quite harmlessly.
