Christmas celebrations at home can require a lot of cleaning before and after! So we thought we would help out by providing our top tips to make your festive season go with a swing, with less stress and more time to spend with your family and friends.
To help maintain a clean and well organised home before, during and after Christmas, here is our list of top tips:
- Prepare a cleaning checklist. It always helps to write things down, plus you will be able to cross them off as you do them which is very satisfying!
- Make sure your cleaning cupboard is well stocked with a wide range of products for all eventualities such as; spills, dirt and grease removal
- Clean or rinse out any special dishes, glassware and cutlery before you need to use them
- Check and source if necessary, extra chairs, crockery and cutlery ahead of time
- Consider using paper plates and napkins that are recycled, particularly at buffets
- Shake out and clean any table cloths and mats
- Beat out carpets and furniture
- Put tissue boxes around rooms that are used frequently
- Stock up on washing powder, detergents, dishwasher tablets, toilet rolls and kitchen rolls
Your daily cleaning routine before and during Christmas should include:
- Cleaning up spills etc straight away as they happen
- Vacuuming and sweeping common areas and the kitchen
- Emptying rubbish bins
- Checking toilet paper and tissue boxes
- Doing a quick clean of the toilets and wash basins
- Covering food and putting it in the fridge immediately once no longer required
For post Christmas cleaning – you should:
- Wash, dry and store away all dishes and cutlery safely – particularly special ones
- Dry clean special outfits before storing
- Gently clean decorations before storing and wrap strings of lights around cardboard or tea towels so that they don’t tangle
- Make a shopping list of any missing items to buy or make before next Christmas
- Distribute leftover bunches of flowers etc to neighbours, community centres or charities
- Clear out your cupboards and drawers to make way for new items and give the old ones to charity shops
- Dispose of your real Christmas tree responsibly and recycle if possible
