Spring is the time for cleaning. After the chilly winter is over, it’s once again time to go into Spring mode and think about cleaning and organising the house. Spring is the perfect time to do all the chores you simply did not do during Winter because it was too cold and you don’t want to do during Summer when it’s too hot. Or it could simply be a time for you to put away all the unnecessary things that you no longer need for Spring.
The question on your mind would be “Can I do it in just one day?” Well, surely you can with the help of family members and with some advance planning.
It starts with a plan
Before you go about doing the business of cleaning the whole house, you need to plan out what to do. Take some time to see where you want to focus most of your attention, and plan the activities you need to do like recycling, cleaning out closets and others.
Check the equipment you need is in working order (i.e. does the vacuum cleaner still work or is the steel ladder still stable). Plan which parts of the house get cleaned first and who to delegate the tasks to.
Decluttering the house
The first thing on your plan of action should be decluttering. If you want to clean your room, the first thing you should do is to remove all obstacles in your way. Those that you don’t intend to use again should be thrown out or recycled.
It’s easier to work in spaces where you don’t have to dodge the furniture or a child’s toy. Plus it would be safer for you since you don’t have to worry about things falling from a shelf or accidentally nudging a flower vase. Organise the “clutter” into what you plan on using, what you need to put into storage and what you have to discard.
Go from room to room
One would often think that divide and conquer is the best strategy; but it would make more sense for the team to work on the same room and then move on to the next. Delegate tasks within the room e.g. who gets to use the vacuum cleaner or who is assigned to move furniture around. What’s good about moving from room to room is that you get better at it as the day goes on. You will figure out what combination of tasks can be performed. As they say, practice makes perfect.
