Many families these days use the kitchen as the main room in the house for cooking, eating, watching TV, socialising and even doing home work!
But have you ever stopped and wondered what ‘nasties’ you could be harbouring in your kitchen?
1) The Kitchen Sink – we are always throwing stuff into the sink, draining glasses or cups of liquid including wshing dirty hands which may have had remnants of raw chicken etc. Ensure you disinfect this daily.
2) Work surfaces – this is where you prepare all your food raw/dry or cooked.
3) Rubbish bins – how often do you disinfect them? When using any cleaning product, spray and leave for a few minutes and then wipe clean.
4) Chopping boards – most of us know the “golden rule” never use raw meat on the same chopping board as any other food products like vegetables – remembering to also wash your hands and use a clean chopping knife when switching. Glass cutting boards are the best to use because they are non-porous. Plastic and wood are more porous and therefore more susceptible to absorbing and harbouring bacteria.
5) Kitchen floors – Researchers have found up to 5-6 million different types of bacteria can be found on the average sized kitchen floor! So what is the best way of cleaning tiles, laminate or hardwood floors? Steaming would be the best way but not all of us have a steam cleaner so mopping would be second best with disinfectant. But just remember when you have finished mopping, ensure you rinse your mop out and let it dry before using again – helps stops germs breeding and stops them smelling.
Keeping your home germ free can be overwhelming sometimes. Making small changes in your cleaning habits will make all the difference.
