Like all textiles, carpets are prone to environmental damage. Their function makes them susceptible to wear and the expectation is that they will last, even if subjected to the hardest of conditions.
Fortunately, it is possible to use simple methods to reduce the impact of environmental hazards. A little care can mean the difference between a worn and damaged carpet and owning a carpet that will last the test of time.
Minimising wear and tear
Carpets are susceptible to wear if in use; edges and fringes are particularly vulnerable. Here are some tips to keep your carpet in tip top condition.
- The use of a rug pad or carpet underlay cushions the carpet and allows it to lie flat and evenly.
- Underlay made from rubber, synthetic foam or anything containing adhesive is undesirable.
- Consider removing outdoor shoes before walking on a valued carpet and placing castor cups under the legs or castors of furniture to protect the pile.
- Most of the dirt in a carpet is dry soil that we bring in from outside which can get trapped in the carpet pile so regular vacuuming is essential, an upright vacuum cleaner with superior air flow is recommended and it is also advisable to regularly check the vacuum cleaner to make sure there are no blockages.
- Heavy items like some furniture should never be dragged across the carpet as this can cause damage to the surface yarn; always lift and carry these items over the carpet and drop them into position.
- If a carpet shows signs of wear, then we at RPC can assess its condition and recommend treatments.
