Did you clean your cleaning materials today?

Scrubbing, mopping and wiping are the essential processes used in cleaning floors, countertops and carpets within the home or the office. To achieve each cleaning task, custodians and homeowners have a schedule or routine to follow every day. Mops, brooms, scrubs and scouring pads are all used to eliminate and disinfect surfaces to avoid germs and build ups. But, at the end of the day, are you aware of how clean your cleaning utensils are?

It’s not something that most of us place importance on. Most of us focus solely on the process and results of cleaning, that we forget to check our cleaning tools. It is important that these mops and scrubs are thoroughly cleaned as well.

These tools wipe off grime and dirt on every imaginable surface, day in and day out. You can just imagine the number of bacteria and germs that build up in every fibre of that mop! Dust and even mould can cling to your wiping towels and scouring pads. Most often than not, these tools are simply rinsed then stored without even checking if all the grime is washed off.

If these tools are not kept in good, clean condition, you are actually bringing in more germs and sickness-causing bacteria every time you clean your home or office. Therefore, after scrubbing and wiping through every nook and cranny of your house, you should focus on properly cleaning these cleaning materials too.

Wash, scrub and disinfect

Just like you would wash, scrub and disinfect your kitchen sink or bathroom floors and tubs, your mops, brushes and rags have to get the same treatment. Ensure that you lather through the grime and stains that have clung to your mops and rags to avoid reapplying these bacteria causing elements when you use these tools again. Disinfecting is important especially if you use these rags on surfaces that your family eats on or does a lot of stuff with.

Do not just store your wet rags and mops without giving them a deep clean and wringing out the excess moisture. It not only ensures your cleaning tools are safe to use, but it can also make them last longer!

Scouring pads and scrubs should be changed regularly

While most homeowners have the convenience of using a dishwasher, there are still a lot of people who use scouring pads to clean their pots and pans and even the dishes. Unfortunately, after washing, these sponges or pads are just placed unceremoniously on top of the sink and there are some who even forget to wash and clean out these sponges. Remember, these materials remain wet for a certain period of time. This makes for a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and even tiny larvae! Gross, right? So, the next time you use a sponge or pad for the dishes, make sure to disinfect it after using and dry it out thoroughly before leaving it on the sink.
