3 Tips to Longer Lasting Curtains

January 13, 2015 / admin
Curtains, along with other office upholstery, provide our offices with a pleasing ambiance.  In addition to their aesthetic value, curtains also play an important role in maintaining a healthy working environment ,by acting as air filter.  For one, they prevent direct sunlight from coming inside the room, making your office cooler. Another benefit of having curtains in your office is that they can help filter noise and sounds which lessens the reverberations that could travel from room to room.

Especially in corporate offices, curtains are big investments.  Along with other things of value, they should be properly cared for, to extend their life span and maximise their benefits for a long period of time.

Who wants to have shabby curtains in the office? And, since it is expensive to buy a new set, the best solution to save on having presentable curtains is to prolong their life span with proper handling and regular maintenance.

Here are 3 tips to longer lasting curtains.

  1. Vacuum the curtains monthly

Include your curtains the next time you vacuum carpets and upholstery to prevent dust from accumulating in the folds.  A dusty curtain is a health hazard. It also becomes dull because its true colour is hidden beneath the layers of accumulated dirt.  When vacuuming curtains, check out the following:

  • The edges, particularly if the curtains are near the hallways or receiving areas – The edges may have also gathered dust from the window sills.
  • Loose trims and threads.  If there are loose edges, the vacuum cleaner will suction in loose threads and fabrics and will destroy your curtain.

You may also need to wash the curtains occasionally when stains, grimes and other liquid have soiled the cloth.

  1. Keep curtains away from direct sunlight

Constant exposure to sunlight will cause the colour of your curtains to fade. If this can’t be avoided, put light coloured curtains in areas exposed to the sunlight as their colour will not easily fade compared to the dark ones.

  1.  Press your curtains occasionally

After having the curtains washed, pressing them might be necessary to maintain the crisp look of the folds.

Washing and ironing of curtains hung inside corporate offices might be too big a job for the regular office cleaning crew.  Cleaning of curtains needs professional expertise to prevent their colour from bleeding.  Cleaning materials used during washing might also contain strong chemicals that will cause uneven patches in the fabric and ruin the material.

For treatment of office curtains, it is wise to consult the cleaning professionals to ensure that your curtains are appropriately handled.
